I started taking photos of people in their environments when I lived in London in 1985. I found the results quite pleasing so took the project forward in 1986 when I returned to Edinburgh. I applied for and was given a grant from the Scottish Arts Council. I worked on the project until 1987. These photographs represent about two thirds of the final edit. I was trying to celebrate the ordinary in central Edinburgh. The work was never exhibited. This project did lead to more commissions. It is the first time the photos have been made available for general viewing since they were taken.
